Need for Mobile App Developers Outpaces Number of Job Candidates

While many people across the country are looking for work, there’s one field that continues to offer employment opportunities—for freelancers and full timers alike. Mobile app developers are in high demand, and in some cases, there are even more jobs than qualified applicants.

Brandon Passley, the founder of Vokal, a Chicago application company, tells Medill Reports that it’s not just that there aren’t enough applicants. It’s that tech job seekers haven’t received the proper skills training or even earlier education that prepares them for a future career. "They teach English and German in high school, why not programming languages?” wonders Passley. This would increase the likelihood of students demanding additional education at the college level.

Medill Reports notes that Passley has furthered the goal of increasing the number of skilled developers by creating a training academy for those even with no prior programming background. The academy’s goal is “to train people in ten weeks to develop mobile applications.”

Katherine Slattery of uTest recently pointed out that at one time, the monetization of apps was often difficult to find. However, with more and more companies now deploying apps for both employee and/or customer use, an app—or even more than one—is becoming a must-have for companies of all sizes.

The need for more mobile app developers grows as the number of devices that run apps increases. Every year the variety of smartphones and tablets has grown, as has their popularity with consumers. When a new Android or Apple product is released, spikes can be seen in the number of job opportunities available for developers and engineers.

Many companies hiring developers today are looking for freelancers because once an app is launched, the position is no longer needed. This allows workers to move from project to project, honing their skills in numerous languages and platforms.

Skilled developers may have the pick of the litter with the number of jobs out there, but hirers aren’t taking just anyone. Many companies are looking for previous job experience in the mobile development world. An applicant with experience may be able to get a leg up on the competition by becoming certified through the Mobile Development Institute.
