How to Launch a Successful Mobile App

Mobile apps have drastically changed the way we function every day, from simply checking the weather to carrying out an important banking transaction. These applications are so omnipresent that they have left almost no discipline untouched.

The volume of mobile applications goes beyond their breadth, as the number of players in the mobile game and quantity of applications turned in also have a serious impact. In June alone, there were more than 5,600 app submissions to the Apple Store, which comes to about 184 apps per day. With so much competition in this burgeoning market, how are applications able to differentiate themselves?

This is no easy question to answer, but there are several factors—the app design, implementation, and market dynamics—that go into launching a successful mobile application. However, if we’re searching for a theme or common thread among the noise, three main types of apps stand out.

1. Apps for services that have long existed in the physical world but have now gone digital to further expand reach: Several services have been very valuable to us in our daily lives, but only a handful have been able to take advantage of the mobile boom due to their limited scope of operations. A classic example here is food delivery. Recently, food delivery apps have been getting a lot of financial backing.

2. Apps that connect subject-matter experts or content with end-users: Several domains can benefit from this category, but education is one that stands out. For example, a simple educational app that helps a child learn math while having fun makes the whole process very interactive and effective. This excites the student to learn outside of school, too, making screen time very productive.

3. Apps that are based on a simple-yet-new idea for a service that has not existed before: Sometimes, we get so immune to the tasks we do regularly that we don’t really think beyond the usual bounds for an app to help ease our way through them. The idea may be simple but very powerful. A great example is India's RedBus app, which is India’s largest bus ticketing platform, and how the founding team started this venture is very interesting.

It is amazing to see the reach of mobile apps and how receptive global communities have been to embrace them. So, do you have any such service or idea that you want to provide to the mobile audience? Put on your thinking cap and get started. Plenty of online resources exist to help you along the way!
