High-Tech Sports Broadcasts Deliver a Whole New Ballgame

Sporting events constitute an experience. Obviously, not everyone across the globe can watch a game in person, so technology has evolved to empower fans to watch sports in real time.

However, it is not about just watching. It is fully connecting with the experience despite watching the game from home. High-tech cameras are evolving with newer features and functions that can capture more sophisticated video content to enrich the viewing experience.

Camera companies are hoping to change how video footage of action sports is captured and create a rich, 360-degree experience. Cities and teams are making deals with video content providers who will be capturing their sporting events, and news channels are enhancing their sports coverage with innovative broadcast ideas.

Part of this boom is due to increasingly tech-savvy people involved with sports teams, who are constantly looking for ways to improve the creative avenues that will help deliver their product to their fans. Innovations include what kinds of cameras are being used, different camera angles, and increased precision at recordings between four hundred and a thousand frames per second.

While most of these technological efforts pertain to enriching the viewing experience for end-users, a lot of this rich video is also leveraged to promote better game refereeing, learning, and coaching. Last year, NHL referees were asked to sport GoPro cameras on their helmets to capture important moves. Being able to reference the sights and sounds the referees experienced can not only settle any call disputes, but also help the coaches and team learn and enhance performance.

This heightened experience has been made possible not merely by the audio/video-capturing capabilities that cameras have traditionally provided. It is largely driven by the close connection cameras have with technology and how the two together positively impact sports.

Though cameras have already been contributing in varied ways to enhance the overall sporting experience, experts say this is just the beginning. Whether it is tracking plays, recording with previously unheard-of precision and accuracy, or providing a whole new depth to game analytics, cameras are changing the overall sporting experience—for players and for fans.
